HammondCare Gymea Bay Respite Cottage is a purpose-designed, single-storey five-bedroom respite home that provides short-term and overnight care for up to five people living with dementia.

Nestled within the residential neighbourhood of Gymea Bay in Sydney’s south, the cottage has been carefully designed to blend seamlessly into its suburban setting. Reflecting HammondCare’s commitment to small-household dementia care, the residence avoids the institutional character often associated with aged care environments, instead offering a familiar, calm and genuinely domestic setting that supports comfort, wellbeing and rehabilitation.

The design prioritises a sense of belonging and connection, creating a safe and welcoming environment where guests can maintain their familiar routines. Generous communal living spaces, accessible outdoor areas and carefully considered interior environments promote social interaction, dignity and quality of life, while providing carers and families with confidence and peace of mind.

Delivered in collaboration with HammondCare and Elita Projects, the Gymea Bay Respite Cottage represents an important addition to community-based dementia care. The project reflects decades of HammondCare’s leadership in person-centred aged care and demonstrates how thoughtful architectural design can support meaningful, compassionate experiences for older and more vulnerable Australians.
